Depends on whether one “votes his interests” ...

Maybe it wasn't from MIT, but Bobby did have a master's degree.

White folks don't like it when that 'bootstraps' argument gets pointed back at them - which is what Williamson seems to be doing here.

“Bootstraps” is just so much “uppity” if you’re the right kind of ... intellectual.

    Tell that to Williamson.

It might never have occurred to them to imitate the habits of people who had gone farther and done better in life than they had, even though they had the experience of seeing people who came from the exact same conditions as they did — or, in some cases, from far worse circumstances — build happy, prosperous, stable, productive lives.

Still short a “privilege” on my bingo card.

I'll trade you a 'hegemon' or a 'patriarchy' if it'll help.

No, he's not. You think poors read National Review?

He's talking to rich white Republicans who tap into phony populism to support Trump and/or because Trump did it. Many of the people reading that piece were born with their boots already on, so to speak. Williamson is saying "don't presume to speak to or for those people, who are bad decision-making losers who need to hear the truth, not your BS."

Back to the essay: How does Williamson use Springsteen like that when Kid Rock is just sitting there?

From an earlier piece of his ... “The white American underclass is in thrall to a vicious, selfish culture whose main products are misery and used heroin needles. Donald Trump’s speeches make them feel good. So does OxyContin.”

Asking honestly, because I don't know - did Wm. F. Buckley feel the same way about the "white American underclass?" Did he hold them in contempt? Does Williamson?

Holding the white underclass in contempt is fundamental to modern American liberalism. It allows for so much.

Until a member of the poor righteous white underclass refuses to sit in the back of the bus ain't a-nuthin' gonna change.
