It's impossible to tell the story of Penn State without Patrrno. He is so woven into the fabric and attitudes of the school, he is the school.

I think it possible to tell a story about a horrific event that happened at Penn State without invoking Joe Paterno as the cultural godfather of the incident, especially when the incident, as the lede points out, is so common nationwide that there's almost a ritual to the aftermath. Especially when the Paterno section is about 4 heats shoehorned into the middle of the story.
