Official job listing below. You can email me resume/clips directly or ask questions at zewing@bakersfield.com.
    – Sports editor Zach Ewing

The Bakersfield Californian seeks an experienced sports reporter to join its team. The position will be a general-assignment position, with emphasis on covering local colleges and high schools.

The right candidate will show prowess as a writer/reporter with the ability to operate in a digital-first newsroom. Experience shooting and editing video is a plus, as is comfort behind the camera and social media expertise. You'll be part of a close-knit team with a fun working environment. You must possess a bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field and hold a valid drivers license with an acceptable DMV record.

Coverage opportunities include a Division I university, Cal State Bakersfield, that has played in the NCAA Tournament and NIT semifinals in the past two seasons; and Bakersfield College, a junior college with a popular, powerful football program. Kern County also is home to a busy auto racing scene (two local tracks, a drag strip that hosts national-level events, plus former Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick and Indy 500 champ Rick Mears are from Bakersfield), the AHL's Bakersfield Condors and about 40 high schools in a town that can't get enough prep sports.

The Californian is a daily circulation in a metro area of about 1,000,000 about two hours north of Los Angeles and two hours east of the Pacific Ocean at the base of California's San Joaquin Valley. We are privately owned and operated and print our own paper at a facility in north Bakersfield.

Our sports section won APSE Top 10s for Sunday and Special Section last year, and we expect to improve on that showing.

Salary is competitive and we offer health insurance and other benefits.

If interested, email a resume and 3-5 writing samples, plus any relevant digital samples to Human Resources at jobs@bakersfield.com.
All candidates are subject to a pre-employment drug screen and background investigation.

Feel like I post this every time a job opens here, but it's true: Good paper and a good crew down there in a great sports town and the commitment to digital is genuine.
