Detroit Lions beat writer -- The Athletic

The Athletic is looking for a Detroit Lions beat writer.

This reporter will be a part of The Athletic’s growing group of journalists bringing a new voice to the sports media landscape in Detroit. This job isn’t for everyone. The Athletic is a subscription-based media company, so it is necessary to write stories and produce podcasts that are different than what is already being published in the market. Each story should be totally original, accomplished through deeper reporting, analytics, long-form storytelling, video breakdown or other analysis.

With that expectation comes the tradeoff of more time. Reporters likely won’t be asked to file multiple stories in a day or immediately as news breaks or games conclude. Our Lions writer will have time to report, re-watch games and dig deep into whatever topic they are taking on. There will be full travel to all games as well as any NFL-related events that are necessary to succeed.

The Athletic also expects interaction with the subscribers, whether that comes via social media or in the comments section of the stories. Our readers are investing in us and we expect our staff writers to engage with them as we build a community.

Experience – We’re looking for the most talented storyteller, analyst and reporter we can find for this position, so experience covering the NFL a prerequisite but it’s a big plus.

About the Position – This is a full-time job, with full benefits. Salary will be based on experience.

It currently serves five locations – Chicago, Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland and Bay Area, along with an expansion in late summer to include a national platform for college sports and hockey. It was founded by Alex Mather and Adam Hansmann in 2016.
