Rangers might've been better off just keeping Darvish, extending a qualifying offer, and taking the sandwich pick when he walks. Those return pieces are very underwhelming.

I agree. Hell, the Mets got more for Reed from the Sox IMO.

Coleman alone is worth more than the three relievers the Red Sox gave up. Calhoun's the 69th best prospect overall. Would it have been better if they had gotten Verdugo, the outfielder who is ranked 28th, as the center piece? Of course. But for a rental, it's not terrible. You could argue it's a better package than what the A's got for Gray.

I was thinking -- how many trades in recent memory have their been where the prospects proved to be better than the established player given up?

The patron saint is Larry Andersen/Jeff Bagwell. There's also Doyle Alexander/John Smoltz, although the Tigers at least went to the ALCS.

Lowe and Varitek for Slocumb comes to mind and while it was done due to certain circumstances, Colon for Sizemore, Lee and Phillips could count.

    That's a good one, Jake.

These deals are at least 20-25 years old, right? Gotta be something newer

EDIT: Della's example was, what, 2001? Closer.

Mark Teixeira and a middle reliever to the Braves for Neftali Feliz, Elvis Andrus, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Matt Harrison in 2007 was pretty bad. Salty was the big name going to the Rangers at the time, but actually ended up being the worst player, while the other three contributed to a pair of World Series teams.

It was compounded by an even worse trade the next year, when the Braves traded Teixeira to the Angels for Casey Kotchmann and a prospect who never made the majors. Teixeira left the Angels for the Yankees after the season and the Angels used the compensation pick on Mike Trout.

I dont know about that one -- those players combined have a 49.5 WAR (26.6 of it is Andrus) since the trade. Teixeria's WAR alone from that time on was 30.5 and he had more WAR after the trade than before.

But he was only with the Braves for about a calendar year.
