I just saw Jay Mohr live last week. He was pretty funny, not Pryor/Murphy/Robin Williams funny (who is?), but enjoyable (great Pacino impersonation.)

I find Stand-up great entertainment, alcohol, some good food, then comedy (hopefully).

I've found there's definitely different classes; I perceive the sophistication between the opening act with the more subtle, deeper main acts.

My favorite was Rita Rudner (opening)/Dennis Miller in Vegas. Rudner was certainly funny but Miller was fantastic.

Only wish I caught Robin Williams somehow in SF before he passed.

  2. No one will believe me, but ... Carrot Top circa 1994.

Saw Seinfeld way back in the late 1980s, long before "Seinfeld." He didn't work blue.

A couple of years ago, I saw David Sedaris. Not a comedian, per se -- more of a storyteller. He wasn't as funny live as he is in his writing.

I've seen other acts at a local bar's comedy club, but no one I remember.

I'd almost rather sit at home and watch Louis CK on TV than go to see him live. The bathroom line alone is better at my house.

Those Rodney Dangerfield specials when you'd see someone for the first time were great. Sam Kinison...amazing.

Those I've seen live include Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Mike Birbiglia and a few Bay Area comics that could kill on a Wednesday afternoon like Johnny Steele and Rob Becker.

I saw Eddie Murphy on the Raw tour. Fantastic. I saw Cosby in Radio City and he was hilarious.

Robert Schimmel was horribly dirty, but was funny and somewhat sweet.

I saw Dice Clay at a club in Brooklyn when he was just Andrew Clay and "Dice" was one of his characters. He was pretty great.

Haven't seen a ton of live standup--something I'd like to do more--but saw Gary Gulman pretty recently, and it was great. Even better than his Netflix special. (He had a bit about alarm clocks that just slayed me.)

A year or so ago I was in LA for work and went to the Improv with a friend. Didn't go to see him, in particular, but thought Dan Mintz was very funny. Reminded me of Steven Wright.

Most of the "new" comedians just remind me of older comedians who did it better.

I've mentioned this before on the board, but I saw the late Richard Jeni in the mid-90s in San Diego. It was in a small club/concert venue in a strip mall near Qualcomm Stadium (he poked fun at himself for doing a gig in a strip mall down the way from a 7-Eleven).
If you're familiar with Jeni or heard his 'Greatest Bits' album, it was his usuall stuff, led by "The Belching Gourmet" and on and on. I just remember laughing so hard my stomach was really sore the next day.
Last live show I went to was about 10 years ago: John Pinette and Kathleen Madigan, two of my favorites, at a local Indian casino. They did not disappoint.
