Sun, sand, surf and one of the best sports departments of its size in the nation -- the Santa Cruz Sentinel has it all, and we’re looking for sports reporter with the same. The ideal candidate has two or more years of experience on a sports desk and can write quickly, clearly and accurately about anything from lacrosse to lawn bowling, soccer to surfing, football to fishing. In addition, he or she must be able to edit for content and grammar, film and produce video and meet paper-thin deadlines.

The Sentinel is a daily paper with a three-person sports staff that has consistently placed in the APSE top 10 for writing, content and design. We cover 13 high schools, two colleges, the NBA G-League’s Santa Cruz Warriors and a myriad of other pro and recreational sports in and around the Monterey Bay and greater San Francisco Bay Area. Weekend and night shifts are required as is social media savvy. Interpersonal skills and drive are imperative.

To apply, send resume, clips of articles and references by July 20 to sports editor Julie Jag at jjag@santacruzsentinel.com.

This is a pretty cool job. I'm curious who left for the position to open up, but the people there are great and do kick ass work. You see Sentinel writers at some of the big pro events and they travel all over the place for the big preps events.

Wondering just like you, Spartan. I've done some stringing for the Sentinel as well as being a daily reader. They do local sports the right way. In addition to what the OP and Spartan mentioned, they staffed Luke Rockhold's last two UFC appearances.

If you get this job, be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for housing, though.

This one was filled quickly, apparently.

Wish more places could work that quickly.

A good hire. Juan's done a lot of stringing for them in the past. Even did one of the mainbars on the Wharf-to-Wharf run for Monday. With five weeks until the start of high school football and the remake of all the leagues in the Monterey Bay area, he'll hit the ground running.
