South Carolina beat writer -- Spurs & Feathers

    Spurs & Feathers, the official publication of the Gamecock Club, is looking for an experienced writer/reporter to coverUniversity of South Carolina athletics. We're looking for a versatile, well-rounded journalist capable of writing for both online and weekly/monthly print publication. Spurs & Feathers is owned and operated by Evening Post Industries. This position is based in Columbia, South Carolina.

    The ideal candidate should be able to produce news stories, game coverage and in-depth features and player profiles. Must be able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment. This position requires the ability to cover major-sports beats, while also demonstrating the knowledge and versatility to write about a variety of other sports and topics. Experience covering a college beat or prep sports preferred. Knowledge of USC athletics a plus. Must be able to write in a clear, concise manner, using proper AP style, good news judgment and a strong sense for identifying and developing compelling stories for a specific audience.

    The ideal candidate should have strong interview and communication skills and the ability to develop a good rapport with coaches, players, school officials and other sources. Candidates should have experience working with digital and social media as well as the ability to produce longer pieces for print product. Some editing, posting and proofing also required. We're looking for a team player willing to do whatever it takes on a small staff dedicated to producing quality digital and print content.     Other requirements:

    • Four-year college degree in journalism or communications.

    • One year of daily newspaper or digital media experience.
