I have no problem with ads that appear on the page and either disappear or need to be X'd. The auto pop-up videos are the problem, either as ads that randomly start playing or content about a totally different subject I have no interest in hearing about.

No, although it's what The Players Tribune does. (Only with players.)

Maybe it's a subtle distinction, but I think that's more palatable than writing on behalf of another "name brand" writer. The player couldn't do it.

I'm always afraid some smart ass is going to come up with a pop-up ad that starts by yelling "HEY YOU! STOP LOOKING AT PORN AT YOUR DESK!"

On a serious note, yes yes yes! Those pop-up videos are annoying.

I agree. And yet do you think the Twitterverse or fans of the athlete know any better? I doubt it.

For what they're paying Bayless and Cowherd...have them write them. What are they gonna do? Quit?

I doubt it, too. Although occasionally athletes have complained about being misquoted under their own bylines, which provides a little glimpse behind the curtain.

For what it's worth, most of the stories I've read on the Tribune have been very well done.

PR usually is. (And even the confessional "boy, what a misguided soul I've been" pieces are PR.)

That's a fair point. They are sometimes still illuminating, though. The John Scott one comes to mind.

Oh, much of it's high quality stuff. As are some biographies that are written "with" writers. TPT is clean, generally classy, all that. I'm just trying to imagine The Politicians Tribune and, you know, a vibrant, ghost-written testimonial from a complete dolt like Scott Walker. (Cruz, though an asshole, would write his own and probably write a decent one.) Or that ad for the guy running against Paul Ryan. Great ad, nails it home, not journalism.
