I'd really like to find out how much Spanier clamped the lid on the story from top to bottom. If the total story doesn't come out during his trial, it probably never will.

Paterno should have done more, yes. But what did Spanier and his lieutenants know? Any plea bargain should come with a total grilling about who knew what, and when, and every decision and communication from that point on. Curley and Schultz should have been grilled as part of their pleas. Pleading guilty shouldn't mean that you get to avoid stating, for the record, what you knew and what you did.

Remember, those who refuse to acknowledge history are doomed to repeat it. Which may be more of a statement about banana-flavored ice cream than Jerry Sandusky. :p

    Spanier convicted on one count:

A jury found former Penn State University President Graham Spanier guilty of one misdemeanor count of child endangerment Friday, ending a case that dragged on for more than four years over whether Spanier and two other university executives covered up previous allegations made against former Penn State assistant football coach and convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky.

The jury, which began deliberations early Thursday afternoon, acquitted Spanier of a separate count of child endangerment and of conspiracy, but delivered a conviction on the other charge he faced, stemming from a 2001 incident in the Penn State locker room. Spanier, 68, offered no reaction when the verdict was announced.

WTF is wrong with these people?

Several other witnesses testified they spoke with Curley and Schultz in 2001, and neither described McQueary’s report as sexual in nature or possible child abuse. Jack Raykovitz, the chief executive of the Second Mile, said Curley told him someone “felt uncomfortable seeing Jerry Sandusky in a shower with a young male.”

Penn State alumni have long questioned why university officials, and not Second Mile officials, have faced criminal charges in connection to Sandusky’s abuse. In his turn at the stand, Raykovitz said he was unaware the 2001 incident was the second time someone had expressed concern about Sandusky showering with a child. (Curley disputed this, and said he told Raykovitz in 2001 about the 1998 incident as well).

After he met with Curley, Raykovitz said, he told Sandusky he should wear swim trunks when showering with boys.

I don't understand why you think anyone would disagree with you here. Yeah, they're bad people.

    Freeh goes nuclear.

Louis Freeh, a voice long silent, erupts after former Penn State President Graham Spanier's conviction

Clearly indicating that in his (Freeh's) opinion, it is indisputable fact that Paterno was fully aware of the nature of Sandusky's activities in 1998.

Which certainly implies to anybody living in the real world he was very likely aware of those activities many years before then.

Court filings indicating some reports of Sandusky's activities may have been made to Paterno as early as 1976, 1987 and 1988 (multiple incidents):

Can Louis Freeh move to Waco, Texas? They could use a dose of cold truth.

It's time to tell the Paterno-slurpers, "We hear any more shit outta you about the statue and the 409 wins, we're gonna start asking the question: If Paterno truly just learned for the first time of Sandusky's predatory activities in 1976, 87 or 88, why did he not instantly hurl Sandusky's ass to the dogs, haul him in to the police and demand immediate prosecution to the absolute limit of the law?"

You'd think a nationally-famous, legendary (by 87-88) towering figure in the sport of college football, who had made his name on integrity and all that good stuff, upon learning anybody associated with his program even peripherally had engaged in such repulsive activities, and thus put everything he (Paterno) had ever worked for in mortal danger, would have exploded in a rage for the ages, dragged the perp in to the cops and, in a figure of fire and brimstone, demanded he be run through the jaws of the legal system and incinerated into ashes.

Yeah, you'd think. Unless ... for some reason ... he couldn't.

What would that reason be? Why would he let it go on for Thirty-Four Years?
