Those are not the higher ups. Those are the Al Bundys who peak in high school and can't afford to buy the newspaper every day.

A slightly different --- and unanswerable --- question would be, "In the pre-internet days, how many readers read the most-read story in your paper, and what was THAT as a percentage of your circulation?"

I would be interested in that number also. But in pre-internet days that was a question that while interesting, was interesting but not particularly meaningful. Newspapers were fat and profitable.

Here's how screwed up the priorities are at the Gannett paper in my town...
Not only have they basically reduced the print edition to a couple of pre-written local features and anything else they can get hold of from USA Today sports every day (they still publish seen days a week), the priority adored by the executive editor right now is Southern Utah University men's basketball. And rodeo.
They are trying to draw interest in a team that's won exactly 29 percent of its games...in the last 10 years! (88 wins, 214 losses) They're on their third different coach in the period, and they went into collective euphoria over ONE win in the Big Sky tournament.
What was never discussed...they beat a team (Montana State) that hasn't advanced past the first round themselves since 2009. Of course, they lost to a rested Weber State team two days later, and the Wildcats are still playing in the postseason, even if it's the CIT (they play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tonight).
The women's team at SUU has more wins in the decade (107) than the guys do AND a Big Sky championship banner that's hanging from the rafters. They're basically ignored.
And there are two high schools in town that have several good sports teams. They're only cared about once or twice around playoff time.

If the executive editor is the one making coverage calls at your paper, turn in your notice now.

I did...within three months after he arrived. For the THIRD time. (That's right...EE has been hired there THREE separate times)
