Where have all the copy editors gone?

I've concluded that a number of websites and publications simply have decided to skip this part of the process. It looks like they get a story and just go with it. Maybe I just lucked out and clicked on the wrong places, but in the first three stories I read this morning, before I even got out of bed:

    * sessions (the Cabinet nominee) in a headline, lower case S
    * may (the month) also lower case
    * pair where it's supposed to be pare
    and
    * where in the *@&^%! did woah come from?

    Rant over. Kerry on.

Did you fall asleep in 2008 and just wake up this morning?

We all had to reinvent our careers and are now in some form of corporate/trade communications, but still cringe whenever we see the numerous copy mistakes on the interwebs these days.

The problem goes far beyond typos or minor errors. Even in high-end publications, convoluted writing abounds.

On the first two, I've seen the same thing at my shop. If using Qwark (or whatever program) and you copy/paste the headline into your website during uploading, it carries the capitalization of how it was typed into the program. If using an all-caps headline style, some editors don't think to use proper capitalization rules. So if they don't when entering it in and don't catch it while uploading, you end up with headlines that have capitalization errors.

    It's Quark, short for QuarkXPress.
