    The News Star
in Monroe, Louisiana, part of the USA TODAY Network, a top global digital media company, which reaches more than 100 million people monthly through a powerful network of mobile & publishing properties is looking for a full-time journalist to report and write about high school sports and business, with the proportion of each topic depending on seasonal needs.

This reporter will focus on sports during football and basketball seasons and on business the balance of the year, although work will include a mix of both topics for much of year. Business reporting will focus, although not exclusively, on 1) restaurants, dining out and entertainment, and 2) jobs.

Monroe is home to CenturyLink, a Fortune 150 tech company that has been a draw for other tech companies, such as IBM. It’s home to the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and two other universities, Louisiana Tech and Grambling State, are in our circulation area. It is the commercial and cultural hub of a 12-parish area in northeastern Louisiana.

The perfect candidate for this position can regularly break exclusive business news that speaks to the consumer in ways that matter. They also must have some background in sports for this football-centric community.

While we're looking for excellent reporters and writers, we expect candidates to prepare multimedia content routinely, including photos and videos.

Reporters in our newsroom continuously grow a fan base by informing and engaging readers. They act as public ambassadors through community outreach and connect with readers through social media. They provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues. They produce watchdog journalism that leads to change. They use our content coaches and audience analytics to shape storytelling that meets audience needs and interests on every platform. And they contribute to the community’s greater good through impactful journalism.

The Monroe metropolitan area is home to 100,000 and is an easy day’s drive from New Orleans, the Gulf Coast, Dallas-Fort Worth and Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Here's what we have to offer:

    • Competitive compensation
    • Comprehensive Health, Dental and Vision coverage
    • Life Insurance
    • 401(K) Saving Plan
    • Paid Time Off

    • Paid Time Off to Volunteer in the Community
    • Employee Discount Program

I'd rather segue to business reporting in the slow seasons than cover crap like 7-on-7 tournaments and other shit we used to have to manufacture to fill space in the summer. Talk about fake news.

I'd rather cover 7-on-7 tournaments than segue to business reporting in any season.

To each their own. Given a choice between writing about a new restaurant/business and shit that absolutely no one outside of the players and parents care about, I'm taking the former every time.

The high school football in NE Louisiana is really good, so there's usually going to be a good game every week and good athletes to cover. Food is good there, too.

Weird that Hot Springs, Arkansas is being used as a selling point for a job in Monroe.

Right? They could've at least added that West Monroe is home of Duck Dynasty.

Especially with Lake Tahoe so near.

You don't have to wear a parka in Hot Springs.

    Just a full body condom.

Not even the jobs in Arkansas use its cities as selling points.

"an easy day’s drive from New Orleans"

Monroe to New Orleans is four hard hours through pine forests and across swamps ...
