SPORTS REPORTER – Abilene (Texas) Reporter-News

If you join our sports staff, you’ll learn on Day 1 that sports is life in our part of Texas.

The Abilene Reporter-News is seeking a talented sports journalist who does not pigeon-hole herself or himself to a seat in press box and a 20-inch story about the game. We are looking for a reporter who breathes digital-first, who wants to tell the story.

Abilene, a city of 125,000 people, is the regional hub for an area of about 5,000 square miles that we call the “Big Country.” We are proud of our Western heritage but we aren’t just cowboys and cowgirls. Abilene is a cultural oasis with a symphony, ballet theaters, community chorus and band, museums and a strong arts community. We serve as a magnet, attracting people from the area for shopping, medical needs, entertainment and education. Abilene has three private universities, a state technical college, a branch of a state university’s health science center and a community college. The city’s largest employer is Dyess Air Force Base.

Our sports staff of five journalists covers three high schools in our city, three universities here and 70 other high schools in our 5,000-square-mile coverage area. This reporter would have primary responsibilities covering one local college and one local high school, but is in no way limited to that. Everyone on the staff participates in projects and other assignments. The position, as with our other sports multi-media journalists, has some sports producer duties.

This journalist will report for the sports junkie, the people who have kids on the team and will have the skills in writing, visuals and social media to draw the non-fan into the story.

We expect this reporter to become the expert on the schools’ sports on this beat. Finding interesting stories that are more than so-and-so is a great athlete or this team has overcome all the hurdles.

The sports reporter shoots and edits photos and videos and researches, reports and writes compelling stories to inform and engage readers. This reporter must be adept at growing a digital audience by producing reliable reports, frequent updates and exclusive details. The reporter also will act as a public ambassador through community outreach, and will be expected to connect with readers -- through social media, on camera and in person through live events.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's in Communication, Journalism, or equivalent experience and education
    • Previous sports reporting experience
    • Previous experience developing a following around personal journalism through use of social media
    • Proficiency on social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Periscope and Snapchat
    • Experience with shooting and editing photos and video on a smartphone
    • Has own reliable transportation and state-mandated insurance
    • Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities
    • Able to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure in a rapidly changing industry
    • Knows how to use time efficiently
    • Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment
We offer competitive pay and benefits including: Comprehensive Health, Dental and Vision coverage, Life Insurance, 401(K) Saving Plan, Paid Time-Off (PTO) and Paid Company Holidays.

How do you apply? I don't see any job posting for sports reporter on the Gannett sites or an email address to send it to.

My guess is it'll be posted by morning because ... well ... holiday.

You could be right. I just figured if this post was already up then they would have a way to apply with it. But that certainly could be it.

Has this gone live yet? I still can't find it on Gannett's site.
