Gawker has a post (sorry for the lack of the link) that claims Thiel did it not for the outing, but for Valleywag's attitude towards Silicon Valley and its attacks on Thiel's business success and political views. The post came across as very self serving, a pat on the back for how a Gawker website had spoken truth to power and pissed off a billionaire.

No one has to pay Daulerio to be a first-rate douche bag, he does that by breathing.

Sorry, Nicky, it's over. Trying to defend the reckless, hateful shite that you publish under the cloak of brave journalism is an insult to bravery and only makes the work of real journalists harder. Your precious school for dyspeptic children is about to be closed.

I find it funny a guy born in Frankfurt and another born in London are squabbling so fiercely over the implications of our free speech laws.

Peter Thiel may be a "thin-skinned billionaire who, despite all the success and public recognition that a person could dream of, seethes over criticism and plots behind the scenes to tie up his opponents in litigation he can afford better than they."

As you said, typefitter, the problem is that Nick Denton doesn't have any of the high ground necessary to be the one writing that kind of letter. It was also self-serving tripe. The real intent was to attack Peter Thiel's credibility. ... not some high-minded point about free speech, as much as that is Denton's go to.

Our free press guarantee, allows you to publish snarky things and things that hurt people. But when that is the basis for most of what you choose to publish, the Thomas Jefferson act is pretty ridiculous. You created a boatload of enemies. It turns out one of them can hit back. ... hard.

The original piece outing Thiel had the headline, "Peter Thiel is Totally Gay, People."

Nick Denton has been totally owned by Peter Thiel, people.

  7. I don't blame Thiel one bit
Two thoughts for Denton and Gawker.

Anybody want to start a GoFundMe for Daulerio's obligations? No?
Can't help but snicker when reading that turd is $100K in the hole. At least.

Yeah, I'm not buying this argument. Also not sure he's right when he says the $140 million won't hold up on appeal:
