Smoky Mountain Rain by Ronny Milsap -- the eighth official state song of Tennessee!

(I assume the first seven are Rocky Top.)

Does "When The Levee Breaks " count as a rain song?

"Who'll stop the rain" is just the second-best CCR rain song, to "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?"

Had never heard the "Lay Down" version with the EHS, thanks for the link. My brother went to Woodstock. Every time footage or photos come up I look for him but have never seen him, not unsurprising since there were so many people there.

Elvis did a lot of schlock, but he had a great voice and really shined when his stuff wasn't over-produced. "Kentucky Rain" is a great song. And did anyone play guitar with more superstars than James Burton?

PS this is a great thread. Kudos to the OP

One of the best lines from Cheers...
Cliff: I've seen fire and I've seen rain.
Norm: Everybody's seen fire and rain, Cliff.

1968-71 was the golden age of rain songs; about a dozen of these songs came from that period:

    • "Rainy Night in Georgia"
    • "Kentucky Rain"
    • Temptations' "I Wish It Would Rain"
    • Both CCR entries;
    • Stones' "Child of the Moon"
    • Melanie's "Candles in the Rain"
    • Clapton's "Let it Rain"
    • "Fire and Rain"
... Just for starters. And lets not forget:

    And...

Not to mention the biggest hit of 1969, which LTL notched above:

The Beatles' "Rain" missed out by a couple years on the front end and "Love, Reign O'er Me" by the Who by a couple on the tail end.

    A couple pre-Beatles "rain classics":

After the Golden Age in 68-71, the disco acts were not to be left out of the action:

The guitar of Billy Joe Walker Jr., the velvet tones of J.D. Souther's voice.
