Spectrum Media, the No. 1 source for news, sports and entertainment in southern Utah and Nevada, has an immediate opening for a sports reporter to cover high school and college athletics in one of the fastest-growing areas of the United States.

The ideal candidate will have a strong portfolio that shows more than game reporting, a team-first attitude, the willingness to engage and build a brand through social media, and the desire to do work that raises the bar for a sports section that is beginning to find its identity.

The position is based in our St. George office. Regional assignments are possible in Cedar City, Utah, and in Mesquite, Nevada. This is a writing-only position; no desk work. The position is full time, with benefits. Salary: $25-26k. We are part of the USA Today Network.

Please send cover letter, resume and 3-5 clips to Executive Editor Steve Kiggins at skiggins@thespectrum.com.

Gateway to the "Mighty Five" national parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, Arches). Not knowing anything about the cost of living in St. George, I would bite if I were younger.

Gorgeous area. 30 minutes from the casinos in Mesquite. 90 minutes from Vegas. Lots of outdoors activities that you couldn't repeat in 10 years' time.

Used to work there back in the 90s. Thanks to the time line, it's actually 30 minutes to Vegas and 2 1/2 hours back, lol. But the cool thing is you arrive in Mesquite before you left St. George. Trippy.

I interviewed for this. Steve was extremely nice and very understanding when I told him I had to back out of consideration. I like the vision he has for this position -- and the sports department as a whole -- and am happy he found someone. Whoever the lucky man/woman is seems to have a great new boss.

Patrick Carr, former sports editor of San Diego State's student newspaper, The Daily Aztec, accepted this position. Congrats to him. Good dude.

Some outstanding golf courses in that area. That's all I got.

That's pretty much all there is. Too bad you can't eat scenery.
