Chicago....too big a percentage of its output is Cetera pap or Cetera-like pap.
Cheap Trick....If enough people forget She's Tight or Don't Be Cruel. Coin flip.
Deep Purple....If it had continued its 80s comeback a bit longer...don't see it.
The Cars....One of the groups that defined New Wave....definitely in.
Janet Jackson.....Probably no in a close one.
    N.W.A......slam dunk.
Nice Inch Nails....could make it; not sure they deserve it.
    The Smiths....The hyper-Koufax effect....I'll say yes.
    Yes....No.
    Chaka Khan...N-n-n-no.
Chic....One of the paragons of good disco, with two members having big influence on other artists. Should be in.
The J.B's....If I knew what that was, I'd make a call.
    Los Lobos.......Are you kidding me?
Steve Miller....Largely ordinary arena rock. No.
The Spinners.....The Rush longevity card won't work here.

Chicago put out some of the most innovative, politically-relevant, listenable music there is between 68-74 or so. Yes, they lost their fastball. What group that lasts that long doesn't? And even their later-career "schlock" is very listenable pop music. Can't believe they are not in already.

Just the other day I heard of a soldier's falling off.

I am not a fan of Chicago, but I'd say they probably deserve it. Yes? Meh. I'd definitely put Cheap Trick on the list, and NWA despite my objections to hip-hop in the Hall. Steve Miller is one of the best guitarists of our time.

I am slightly embarrassed to say I know nothing of The Smiths.

Agreed, although I would have both in there.

In the first half of the 70s, the biggest bands were the Stones, The Who, Skynyrd, Zeppelin and Yes.

And then they came back with a monster album in the 80s as well.

    Yes on Yes.

Our Captain speaks the truth, Yes was huge.

The kids nowadays, they don't care, so it don't matter.

Yes should be in Jann's museum / whatever.

Chicago, Yes, The Cars and, by the skin of their teeth, Cheap Trick.
