It sounds bad, but someone in the industry just posted on FB that the magazine standard is to have freelancers. I don't know that to be true, but it sounded authoritative enough.

Does seem really stupid to do a week before the Super Bowl though. But maybe they're already lined up.

This would seem to make more sense for a national magazine than a daily newspaper, since the magazine doesn't deal with quite as many split-second dispatching decisions. Most of the time they're probably using freelancers anyway.
It's still terrible, though, for a magazine that has ALWAYS boasted top-notch photography as one of its hallmarks, even as one of its selling points.
On the bright side, does this mean they're looking for swimsuit photographers? I can use a point-and-shoot and can travel to Bora Bora on a week's notice. We'll call it an experiment in reader involvement.

Nah, they're just going to grab the pics off the phones of every athlete who is dating a model.

It's not as if they promote their photography in the title of the magazine.

First phone call goes to Justin Verlander.
Wait, that might be from Penthouse and not SI.

Don't you at least keep one on staff to avoid the absurdity of it all? Like one photographer friend said, it looks like an Onion headline.

Man, that's harsh for an "Illustrated'' magazine...

The second these editorial companies split from the more profitable side of the corporation like with Time Inc. or News Corp., this is what happens.
