Yes, correct. People overvalued wins. Nolan Ryan finished 4th in Cy Young voting in 1981 with a 1.69 ERA. It's laughable to look back and see what was "valued" back then.

Does Felix Hernandez get a single vote back then when he won only 13 games?

    So?

    I'm OK with that.

We should evaluate the strength of economics arguments on public opinion, as well.

I'm kind of heartened to hear that Ragu has apparently abandoned libertarianism due to its unpopularity.

Luckily we have those numbers! Let's look at league average ERAs for each year each of them pitched, then average all those together to give us one baseline!

    Morris 1977-1994:
    1994 4.51
    1993 4.19
    1992 3.75
    1991 3.91
    1990 3.86
    1989 3.71
    1988 3.73
    1987 4.29
    1986 3.97
    1985 3.89
    1984 3.81
    1983 3.87
    1982 3.86
    1981 3.58
    1980 3.84
    1979 4.00
    1978 3.69
    1977 4.00

If you do the math (and if I did mine right) that's an average of 3.84 during his time.

    Hudson, 1999-present
    2012 4.01
    2011 3.94
    2010 4.08
    2009 4.32
    2008 4.32
    2007 4.47
    2006 4.53
    2005 4.29
    2004 4.46
    2003 4.40
    2002 4.28
    2001 4.42
    2000 4.77
    1999 4.71

Again, let's take the average: 4.36

Indeed. Sub 3 ERAs were not the norm during his career.

That at least helps to explain Hudson's overall higher career ERA.

Average pitchers were putting up sub-zero ERAs in almost all the years that Morris pitched....they only didn't in 5. And 2 of those were RIGHT at 4.
