Hate 'em both, with the exception of "War" by U2. As someone else said, Bono's self-importance comes through often. With DMB, it's a couple things: It reminds me of all the pretentious wannabe-hippie stoners in college ... not the cool, inclusive ones you generally see, but the ones who automatically judge you depending on where you get your weed or the apparatus you use to smoke it. Also, the band's actual sound makes me cringe ... especially on whatever song is the overplayed one. Between the sax and Dave's voice, I just can't handle it. I heard it in a store not too long ago and had to leave. It just made me ... angry.

    Maybe it's a baton. Or a pole.

The discussion about 90's bands reminded me of two songs that were definitely overplayed, Chumbawumba's "Tubthumping" and Stereo MC's "Connected."

In each case, though, I did buy their albums and found out they both had some good material beyond the one song that kept getting airplay.

And "Tubthumping" is not only a candidate for most overplayed song, but a candidate for song most misunderstood by the general public.

Dave Matthews Band fans are overbearing, like soccer fans.
But they are as diverse as his own catalog.
I went to high school with a guy who's now a physician.
He goes to several shows a year. I see the pics- it's a real motley crew.

Great piece here, by the way.

Really nails what the DMB oeuvre inspires in people.

I think everybody has bands they like that inspire eye-rolls from the masses.

Mine, I think, is the Eagles.

We have that in common, then.
I love the Eagles, and don't care that they're perceived as a soft act.

Yeah, I know that's the reason, and probably the true reason I don't like U2. But I was a non-U2 fan long before Bono's messiah complex. But I think DMB makes excellent songs, and the band is very talented.
