NJ Advance Media is a new digitally focused media company providing content, sales and marketing services for the most popular sources of news and information in New Jersey, including NJ.com and The Star-Ledger. We are dedicated to serving the people and businesses of New Jersey with top-quality journalism and marketing solutions across our leading print and digital platforms.

We have multiple opportunities in content, sales and marketing. If you're a creative, motivated and entrepreneurial team player who thrives in a highly collaborative work environment, we want you to join our company. The ideal candidate embraces the rapidly evolving media landscape and thrives in a culture of innovation.

You’re a talented and experienced reporter, comfortable with digital and social media and passionate about college sports. You can deliver exclusive news, follow a story, write a lede, engage an audience and create clean, journalistically sound copy. If this describes you, this is your opportunity to take ownership of a prime beat covering sports at Rutgers University. You’ll deliver hard sports news along with commentary and human interest stories, and parlay trending topics into a series of related stories.

At NJ Advance Media, we’re building a team to drive news on the cutting-edge of digital journalism. You’ll take ownership of the Rutgers beat, bringing news to a digital audience and generating excitement around your work by interacting directly with your readers. This is your opportunity to leverage your talent to do what you love, add a strong voice to the discussion, and help us build a media company for the future.

To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have:

    * A bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
    * Solid journalism experience, including a track record of success in sports reporting
    * Proven experience building, maintaining and engaging an active audience in sports
    * Strong critical thinking skills and a focus on creating content for the audience rather than on promoting particular teams, players or coaches
    * A proven ability to cultivate sources beyond the obvious ones
    * The ability to work independently and prioritize tasks appropriately under deadline pressure in mobile contexts
    * Strong reporting, writing and organizational skills
    * A solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
    * Click the "Apply" button for further details...

Sounds like a good job, especially with an AD so supportive of
    the media.

Is someone leaving or are they expanding after the layoffs that followed an expansion?

I do not understand letting quality writers go (as the Star-Ledger has) and then posting a comparable opening like this.

My guess is they'd rehire someone who was recently laid off.

Didn't they advertise a Rutgers reporter opening pretty recently, like within the last year?

Yes, for NJ.com. I'm not sure whether it was filled. However, I've heard some people who applied for that opening have received direct e-mails from HR reps at Advance Media about the new posting.

Advance is supposedly consolidating all coverage from the newspapers and websites under a single umbrella, and a lot of people are going to lose their jobs as of Sept. 1. I believe at least one of the Rutgers writers has already left, not sure how many there were across the multiple papers and platforms.

It's intriguing how the ad focuses on the website and barely mentions the paper. It makes me wonder what might be coming next.

FWIW, it was still listed on their site as recently as Saturday.

No one was laid off from this particular position. Star-Ledger lifer Tom Luicci was the Rutgers beat writer for the past 13 years, until early April, when he went to work FOR Rutgers -- in a newly created digital media/PR position inside the athletic department:

He said the SL, as it geared up for the layoffs, made him "a fair offer" to stay.

  12. Any updates? Anyone hear anything?
