RIP James Street

So fresh we beat Wikipedia.

 

The first great "bone" QB. Street was a slick ball handler that made it work. The spread has
kind of gradually evolved but "the bone" just came out of nowhere in '68. So different from
anything being run at the time. Texas had some great RB's at time in Steve "Woo Woo"
Worster , Jim Bertelson, Chris Gilbert and Ted Koy.

And like his son, a great baseball player. RIP.

 

Loved Terry Frei's book about the Texas/Arkansas 1969 game where Street led the comeback.

I wondered... was Jason Street from Friday Night Lights inspired from James Street?

 

Almost certainly.

 

I wondered that too. Always figured there was a connection.

 

Street went 20-0 as a starting QB at Texas.

Not bad ...

 

Replaced Bill Bradley who moved to safety and had a pretty nice career in
the NFL with The Eagles

 

This one really hurts. As little kids in New Jersey (of all places), my brother and I thought the Longhorns' Wishbone was the coolest thing ever. James Street, Steve Worster, Jim Bertelsen, Cotton Speyrer, Happy Feller (still one of my favorite names ever), Darrell Royal, et al were among our heroes, and when Texas beat Joe Theismann and Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl to clinch the national title, we were thrilled.

 

As an ND fan, I naturally hated him. IIRC, he took offense if announcers or anyone called him "Jimmy" or anything but James.
