Anyone have any thoughts on this one or at all familiar with Jackson Newspapers?

  3. Small, locally-owned paper. Pay will prolly be below scale.

Ripley is 30 minutes from Charleston. There's not much in Ripley, unless you like fast food chain restaurants.

Jobs there often lead to a move to the Charleston papers.
As a sports guy - they have (or at least had) two - you'll cover one of the county's two high schools. Ripley (AAA) is the bigger school, but Ravenswood (AA) is the more competitive and rabid.
The sports folks at both schools are EXTREMELY nice.

However, the area has been decimated by the closing and downsizing of its two largest factories - the loss of about 1,500 jobs over the last three years. So I imagine circulation is down.

As far as covering Jackson County, and despite being wedged between a number of much larger daily papers (two in Charleston, Parkersburg and Pt. Pleasant), this place OWNS the county coverage. They do a solid job on everything Jackson County. And the reporters who went to jobs at the Charleston papers are top-notch.

Thanks for the insight! Looks like they have a Wal-Mart there, so that's, um...something.

I'd give Ripley a year or two.

Ripley, West Virginia. What life must be like there.

Kane Davis is from there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ripley,_West_Virginia 4-10 career record, 5.53 ERA.
