    viewed as the anti-Bonds? maybe viewed as not as much of an asshole, but even that was always debatable.

    Even when he was in trouble with the feds for his involvement in a counterfeiting scheme, Billy Cannon was never a pariah in Baton Rouge. He'd have to do a lot more than print funny money to become a zero down there. Once he'd done his time, it didn't take him long to return to hero status with the folks on the bayou.

    Oh no. Before 2002, he was absolutely the guy who Played The Right Way. He was quoted in the Rick Reilly article (2000, maybe 2001) and everyone was on his side. It wasn't until the motorcycle accident and the dugout fight that people really figured him out. Reporters knew it maybe, but not fans.
