If his administration stays on the sidelines while the school (and, if you believe some of the rumors, the state government too) tries to shove this under the rug, he looks like he's part of the cover-up as well, or at the very least that he doesn't have the guts to do the right thing.

If the Obama DOJ does get involved, he's bringing the federal government into what is (at least for now) strictly a state matter. In addition to inflaming those already upset about "the federal government being too large and too powerful," it risks angering the electorate of a state that he needs to win to get re-elected next year, a state where Obama is even more unpopular than he is nationally and where many people love Penn State.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Gov. Tom Corbett today said he allowed the release of a $3 million state grant to The Second Mile foundation this summer in part because he did not want to compromise the grand jury probe of Jerry Sandusky by talking about it with his staff or advocates in the Legislature.

The Corbett Administration signed off on the Second Mile grant in July, after a review of all Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program applications initially approved for release by his predecessor, Ed Rendell.

"Yes I knew this (Sandusky investigation was under way), but I could not act publicly on this without saying certain things that would have possibly compromised the investigation," Corbett told reporters after an unrelated event in Philadelphia. "So eventually we did approve it."

So he couldn't compromise the investigation and tip anyone off ... after the grand jury had already heard the testimony. Just hand out $3 million to keep up appearances. Got it.

I also guess sooner on the governor's resignation, and maybe sooner than that.

That is the lamest excuses I have yet heard in this entire affair. And that is saying a lot given some of the other contenders. Second Mile had no leverage. What were they going to do? Go to the press and and complain. That would just bring further publicity to the allegations.

But back in 2009, when the case first landed in the office of the attorney general, no one knew where it would lead. The mother of a Clinton County, Pa., freshman called the local high school to report that her son had been sexually assaulted by Sandusky. Sandusky was barred from the school, where he had served as a volunteer coach, and the matter was reported to the authorities.

The district attorney in Centre County, where Sandusky was alleged to have molested the boy, passed the case on to the attorney general. The district attorney, Michael Madeira, said Wednesday that his wife’s biological brother had been adopted by Sandusky years before.

Wow. I mean, I knew State College was small and everyone was kind of inter-related (not literally, just in all knowing each other) but wow.

I missed a few pages, so if that was mentioned earlier, I apologize. I've kept up pretty well, but missed about five pages yesterday.

EDIT: Went back and read the four I missed, and this was in an AP story linked on the previous page. I suck. Still ... wow.

I believe the Dept. of Education is already conducting an investigation, probably a money trail deal, as that is the department's only real power related to the school.

That's in regard to DOE rules and regulations. The DOJ will be interested in a lot of other things which may be outright violation of federal laws.

For instance, if Sandusky transported minors across state lines to commit sexual assaults. Or, if Second Mile fundraising efforts took place in multiple states.

The FBI was already called in to help sweep the stadium following the bomb threat last weekend. Pretty sure they can be requested by the governor as well. Certainly in light of the 'interstate transport' aspect of things.

Corbett won't resign. He'll just blame his troubles on "the elite liberal media" and remain defiant. Pennsylvanians will have to wait until November 2014 to get rid of him - assuming they still remember Corbett's supposed role in this by then.
