Question: If I set up my own website to start a blog, I can look up all kind of statistics. I know how many visits each post is getting and I can see where the traffic is coming from. (i.e. someone posted a link on SportsJournalists.com).

And, I know if I'm reaching anyone or if I'm just talking to myself.

If I post a blog on a site like the Huffington Post, am I able to find out any of that?

I think it would be very frustrating if I couldn't.

They sell "promoted tweet" and "trending topic" spots.

You can't, and yes, it's a little frustrating.

The plus side is that what you've written gets seen by more people than the typical personal-blog post, and the Amazon widgets can help you move some books.

Entirely depends on the site. Usually they do give you a "views" counter as a carrot; it's motivating when you get 2k views on something.
