Has there been any word on memorial services?

that sucks. real good guy. not too many guys that have that much time in (thought he was a few years older though) are that patient and friendly in answering questions or helping out. R.I.P. Mr. Shannon.

edit: saw spnited's post about his age, was thinking he was mid 60s.

BYH, great post, echo everything you wrote, pretty much think everyone does.

I never knew this prototypical New Yorker was born in Indiana: (Later information indicates he was not born in Indiana, but spent part of his youth there)

Mike Vaccaro with a nice tribute:

And a nice piece about official scorers that Gordon Edes wrote a few years ago:

Thanks for all the links, smasher. It also seems the funeral arrangements are a bit different than earlier posted:

Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Dancy Funeral Home, 9 Smull Ave., Caldwell. A funeral service will take place on Monday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m., at Caldwell United Methodist Church, 8 Academy Road, Caldwell. Interment will be immediately following at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Caldwell.

This is upsetting, from Bill Madden's 10/29 NY Daily News column:

    THIS BUD'S FOR SHANNON
The Bill Shannon story, in which the respected and dedicated longtime official scorer in New York tragically lost his life in a fire in his West Caldwell, N.J., home on Tuesday, just gets sadder and sadder. Turns out Shannon died practically penniless, and there was no money to pay for a funeral and burial. Originally, the Yankees stepped up and offered to pay, and several members of the Baseball Writers Association offered to send personal checks. However, sources here said when Bud Selig found out about the situation, he immediately said the commissioner's office would take care of it, and Shannon, for whom there will be a memorial service in West Caldwell on Monday, will be properly laid to rest.
