Probably, although you'd think the head guy would step in and prevent disaster. But yeah, it's mostly on whoever sent that package in.

This seems to be the obvious answer. Don't know why it's even an issue. The LSU player took his helmet off after the Vols recovered the fumble and the game was over. The 13-men on the field happened before the play. Apples and aardvarks.

They just replayed the game on CBS College Sports. You can see the back judge reaching in his pocket for a flag before the camera pans away. Probably didn't help matters that the end zone was painted yellow.

All I know is whenever these controversial endings happen in SEC land, it ALWAYS seems to work to the advantage of the team that was favored in the game and/or still in the title hunt. Uncanny how that works.

Didn't Tennessee have several players who took their helmets off too, and about 40 players on the field at that time? If the LSU guy is subject to a flag, isn't UT also? The game's over, or it's not. Or, you use discretion, as someone suggested, because both sides acted as if the game were over. Hell, after the LSU touchdown, Dooley left. No PAT try, despite the possibility of LSU botching it. Wouldn't UT have had a shot at 2, if only one in a million?

Well, you could have a half-the-distance-to-the goal penalty on Tennessee for too many men on the field. Then, you have a dead ball foul for unsportsmanlike conduct on LSU for the helmets. So you replay the down from the 16.

I just want to point out that plays aren't ruled dead. They're dead by rule. The whistle doesn't (or really, isn't supposed to) sound until after the play is dead.

Helmets, plural? Did more than one LSU guy toss a helmet?

Why would you penalize a player for taking his helmet off after the game was over? The question is a rather silly one.
