Junior Walker on "Shotgun." I think we see a trend here. It's either Clarence or Junior.

Can a solo be great if the song sucks?

And while I don't think it's the "greatest," per se, "Time Passages" by Al Stewart isn't half-bad either.

I've always liked hearing the sax in the closing credits of SNL.

When the Big Man hits the notes on Jungleland in some of those bootlegs from the late 70s, it is freaking magic. Just the perfect transition of the song to the coda. However, I don't like the way that Bruce has played the song starting with the Reunion Tour -- he's reading the lyrics instead of singing and really seems to go through the motions. Also, I tend to watch the solo hoping that Clarence doesn't embarass himself with brutal notes (which usually happens).

I've written it here before, but we cheer the idea of the Big Man, not his musical skill. Listen to some of the stuff from the 70s when he was at the top of his game and he was such a vibrant musician. As to the best solos, I'd go with Thunder Road, Sherry Darling and Bobby Jean.
