My understanding is that the slot editor (the copy desk chief) deals with sports, and it's helpful to have a sports background. Bend is isolated (three hours from Portland) but has some world-class outdoor opportunities.

Bend is the home of Deschutes Brewery, which is only the best beer on God's green earth.

Hopefully some of the folks dumped by the Oregonian today can land there.

One of our photogs just left for Bend at the beginning of the year. Very talented guy. He has had nothing but great things to say about the job and has tried to "Harriet Tubman" a couple of us up there. It's a family-owned joint and isn't run like a McPaper. Pay is great for the size.

good paper...solid community...somewhat isolated, making them the news source for much of Central Oregon. But it is a drive to get to a city...Portland is a good 3-hour trek and that's if there's not snow to deal with. If you like outdoor recreation this is a great spot...hiking, fishing, skiing...it's all abundant here. An aunt and uncle spent a large portion of their life on the outskirts of town and loved it.
