Slappy’s 25 Things about the College Football Poll
    Monday, Oct. 5, 2009 at 3:20pm

    1. I’m not understanding why Auburn is so low. It’s taken the Tigers five games to score one point less than it did all last season.
    2. Are we penalizing Notre Dame because we’re A) sick of Jimmy Clausen and B) hate Charlie Weis? If USC won three games in the last minute, would it have 11 points in the poll or be top 5?
    3. Same idea, different result: Did Michigan get booted out of the poll for losing in overtime in a game they were predestined to lose because of DickRod? Would it have happened to Kansas?
    4. Iowa’s lucky, but if Michigan wins, will the Hawkeyes freefall?
    5. So you know, Central Michigan’s votes are coming from one person, not a group of people who think the Chippies need a spot here.
    6. If Boise and Cinci run the table and the rest of the FBS has a loss, should they play for a championship?
    7. Is Stanford worthy of a spot?
    8. Does Bama get burned at Mississippi or is Jevon Snead the most overrated SEC quarterback since Tee Martin?
    9. The last time Webby’s boys cracked the top 25, they peaked at No. 2. Can USF go that high again?
    10. Oregon is No. 14 and hasn’t lost a game since they lost a player. Think Chip Kelly has any regrets?
    11. Which team gets the bigger patsy this week: Penn State with Eastern Illinois, Texas with Colorado or Boise State against Bye?
    12. Nebraska and Missouri on Thursday night? Have these two programs sunk that low?
    13. Deep down, think Les Miles likes Nick Saban?
    14. Anyone else waiting for Ohio State to be the team to pop Fraud’s balloon this week?
    15. My feet resemble bear paws.
    16. OK, they really don’t, but I saw that line on one of these once and thought it was ballsy stupid.
    17. Which team gets their bubble burst twice and still goes to a BCS bowl – Virginia Tech, USC or Florida?
    18. 13 teams are unbeaten – four in the SEC alone. How many remain standing at the end of the weekend?
    19. Do four unbeaten SEC teams mean the league is really good or scheduling is really easy?
    20. Think if Jim Delany had to do it all over again, we’d have no Big Ten Network?
    21. Think if they had to do it all over again, we’d have an 18-team WAC with divisions instead of two nine-team leagues?
    22. Biggest disappointment this season? Georgia? Okie State? Oklahoma?
    23. Stealing from Whitlock: Which team will win first – Ball State or Kansas City? I say Ball State; KC doesn’t get to play Eastern Michigan.
    24. The dome of the US Capital weighs 8,909,200 pounds of cast iron. (just seeing if you’re all still with me)
    25. Tebow or Bayou? Discuss.

I'm also shocked that Notre Dame isn't getting much love.

When Notre Dame is looking better-than-mediocre against mediocre opposition, then we can talk about the Irish getting some votes.

And just for the record, those CMU votes are not from me, me being the MAC fan boy of the group.

They beat that vaunted Eastern Michigan team on Saturday though and they may make an entrance into the poll.

For weeks, I've had this feeling that Alabama -- not Florida -- was the best team in the country. Today, after watching both on CBS, I'm finally going to act on it. If I believe 'Bama would win today head-to-head at a neutral site, then I probably ought to rank them as such.

I know it seems like odd timing given how the Gators just handed LSU a rare prime-time loss in Death Valley, but I just like the Crimson Tide.

    1. Alabama
    2. Florida
    3. Texas
    4. Virginia Tech
    5. Boise State
    6. Texas Christian
    7. Iowa (up 5)
    8. Southern California
    9. Ohio State
    10. Miami, Fla.
    11. Cincinnati
    12. Louisiana State (down eight)
    13. Nebraska
    14. Oregon
    15. Kansas
    16. South Florida
    17. Penn State
    18. Brigham Young
    19. Georgia Tech
    20. Oklahoma State (down 4)
    21. Utah (replacing No. 18 Ole Miss)
    22. Oklahoma
    23. Auburn
    24. West Virginia
    25. Houston (replacing No. 22 Wisconsin)

And we'rrrre back ... from Florida. I couldn't vote last week because I was on the sunny beaches of the Keys on an anniversary trip with Mrs. Bubbler. Here goes ...

    1. Texas
    2. Florida
    3. Alabama
    4. Boise State
    5. Virginia Tech
    6. TCU
    7. USC
    8. Ohio State
    9. Cincinnati
    10. Oklahoma
    11. Iowa
    12. Kansas
    13. Oklahoma State
    14. Oregon
    15. South Florida
    16. LSU
    17. BYU
    18. Utah
    19. Miami
    20. Nebraska
    21. Houston
    22. Georgia Tech
    23. Auburn
    24. South Carolina
    25. Wisconsin

    Last out: West Virginia

I dropped Penn State. Look at their resume, it is absolutely hideous. Compare them to other one-loss teams and there's no way they belong in the poll. The one time they were tested, they got dropped at home by Iowa. Buh-bye Nittany Lions.

I also dumped Ole Miss, which appears to be one of those hindsight are 20/20 overrated teams going into a season. Same for UGa.

I kept Wisconsin because their loss is a higher quality loss than Penn State's, or West Virginia's, or Rutgers, or Pitt, etc.
