When did newspapers start covering high school sports?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I have a feeling this phenomenon is less than 20 years old. Can anyone trace this back to its origin?

  2. Hell, no. I've done research back to the 1920s, '30s and before that had preps galore.

Easily back to the 20s and 30s

(And, no, I was not covering until the 70s)

My guess is that it started when high schools started playing football.

I've seen old clippings of when my grandpa played high school basketball and that was 1928. If anything, they used to get covered in greater depth 40, 30 years ago, when papers had a lot more space. At my old place, it was an afternoon paper in the 1950s and '60s and they'd have 10-inch stories on 15, 20 games a night.

I have a feeling that Dustin Hoffman was in Star Wars. True or false?

True. He was the soprano sax player in the cantina band.

    Little known fact.

Was there televised sports before ESPN?

Trust your instincts - you were right on. The first recorded coverage of high school sports by a newspaper was USA Today's coverage of the 1990 McDonald's All-America basketball game. Shawn Bradley won the MVP. Before that, no word was ever written about any high school athlete ever.

    You nailed it.

In Chicago, it goes back at least as far as the 1890s.
