The Natchez Democrat, a 10,000-circulation daily surrounded by nine high schools and one university, is currently recruiting its next sports reporter. Ideal recruits will have sports experience at a college newspaper, a weekly or daily, Quark or InDesign experience and an eye for the story behind the game. Although much of our coverage is of preps and Alcorn State University, we branch out to LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss and the New Orleans Saints when pertinent. Job duties include writing, page design and heading up our weekly outdoors page. Requirements include a desire to learn and grow while making a difference with your work while you hone your knowledge and skills. Our location on the Mississippi River makes us a mecca for hunting, fishing and even a little kayaking. Tremendous amount of turnover. It's a Boone paper, so pay is bad. It's even bad compared to other low-paying gigs.

 

This is a job that is certainly for recent college graduates. The former poster is correct. They won't pay much at all, but it is good experience for those young up-and-coming journalists. I was close to applying here when I graduated from Mississippi State but opted to take a temporary news writing gig with The AP in Jackson (I am back in sports now covering Auburn).

And if the person who posted this job is Jeff Edwards - which I am almost certain it is given the username - he is a great guy. He used to be my boss at the MSU campus paper. If you have to work for him or with him, it is a plus. He's a great guy. (Give me a shout out sometime, Jeff. It's Ross.)

Anyway, young journalists who haven't had much real newspaper experience should certainly apply. This would be a good start. You will find out quickly if you really want to be in this business. It will serve as a good learning experience.

Pertaining to the area, there is a casino. And that's all you need to know.
