I am having a brain fart here. We have a player in our coverage area with the last name Roberts. Is it Roberts' touchdown or Roberts's touchdown? Thanks in advance.

 

I thought it would be Roberts' touchdown.

However, checked Canadian Press Style Guide:

Singular nouns and names ending in s (or s sound) normally take an s'.

ie: Chris's sandwich, Burgess's novel, the witness's testimony, Strauss's opera.

 

Roberts' touchdown.

 

Well, anyone care to cast the deciding vote? We have one for each.

 

Lots of papers don't use the Roberts's style.

When in doubt, though, wv, go with "touchdown by Roberts."

If I had a vote, I would use Roberts' over Roberts's (as you know, Robert's is just plain wrong).

 

See, I think Roberts's is just plain wrong.

It looks weird.

 

New York Times stylo is, I believe, Roberts's.

They're one of the few holdouts, though, because while correct, the extra-ess possessive looks awkward.

I'd use Roberts's, but I do like one of the previous suggestions: if you can write "touchdown by Roberts," that pleases everyone.

 

I think the Roberts's is a new concept over the past few years. But it's still wrong.

You wouldn't say, Rah - bertz - z touchdown. You would say Rah - bertz touchdown.

 

Isn't NYT style Mr. Roberts's???
