Says the guy with the same response on almost every post.

Edit: Again Dooley, you're just assuming the asterisk is used without explanation or context. I'm not going to get into the use I had in mind on this thread, but it wasn't simply. "Hey, let's put an asterisk on there because he's a cheater."

The asterisk is a part of the story because tons of people think he broke the record because of steroid use. Again, it's part of the story. That's not editorializing.

If the story was about how tons of people think he was on roids, then yes, it works. But for the story about the home run itself, I think you have to drop the *.

A good many, but who cares. It doesnt really matter because we will see what happens tomorrow.

This chase for the record isn't just about the record. C'mon. It's about breaking the record under a cloud of possible steroid use.

How about: "756*?" for a hede? Or simply "*?" instead?

The former acknowledges the feat, the controversy and the uncertainty all in one hede. At least the attempt is to not pass judgement, but to reflect what people are thinking and feeling about Bonds's blast.

Pallister, an answer like that explains why we're going to see asterisks, because a lot of people in decision-making positions will have a hoot seeing how cutesy-snarky they can be (and I'm not saying you would, but there are people who will think like that and follow through on it)

And no, an asterisk is not part of the story. An asterisk is a pernicious design element that should not be anywhere near a Bonds hedline tonight. Do you think news side should have put an asterisk beside a hed saying "Simpson Found Not Guilty"?

    How about "One Giant Leap"?

Even though it's never been proven he used steroids, IT'S PART OF THE STORY! This isn't that hard of a concept to grasp. Watch every post-game show and it'll focus as much on the steroids scandal as it does on the actual record.

Apples and oranges. One is a high-profile double murder case. The other is a stupid baseball record.

If you're a good journalist, both deserve an equal standard of fairness.
