    Description:
If you are a sharp journalist and a sports fanatic, the News, an award-winning group of eight weekly newspapers covering suburban Las Vegas, might have a position for you on our six-person sports staff. With a circulation of more than 230,000, the News covers everything from high school sports to golf, outdoors, recreational sports, bowling and auto racing. We pride ourselves on quality journalism, and last year Suburban Newspapers of America named our sports section the best among large weeklies. We are looking for aggressive, hard-working reporters who know how to tell a story. We're after more than just nuts-and-bolts game stories. A degree in journalism or a related field is preferred. We prefer reporters with some experience but will consider qualified entry-level candidates. As part of Greenspun Media Group, we offer a competitive pay and benefits package. Please send resumes and relevant work samples to: Greenspun Media Group, Attn: Human Resources, 2290 Corporate Circle, Suite 250, Henderson, NV 89074. To apply via e-mail: jobs@gmgvegas.com

  2. The only job I would want other than sports reporting is that of a pro poker player. Because of that, there is no way I could take this job. I'd do all the work necessary at the start, but the minute I realized I could start procrastinating because it's a weekly, I'd start spending too much time at the casinos.

    But it's fun to dream.

I know a guy who is an editor for those papers out there. They're making money hand over fist out there (they publish an alt-weekly and some tourist papers). Don't know how well they pay, but those are some very good community papers.

Speaking as a soon-to-be departing employee – this would not be a bad first or second gig, or a job for a dedicated sports writer who just wants to move to Vegas. You're not going to be covering UNLV or USA Basketball, and 90% of it is preps and community, but there are some good stories to be had. A lot of solid athletes either came out of Vegas or moved to Vegas, and if they're in the communities that are covered, they generally get featured by the reporters here. Pay isn't stellar, but it's pretty good for a community weekly and certainly livable. The sports desk has five reporters and an editor that's been at the paper for 10 years - he knows the community better than I know a computer keyboard (without looking).

The staff works very hard at keeping folks at 40 hours a week, no less, no more, but if you're a hard worker, they're not afraid to give you overtime if it's necessary. Shifts are generally 9 to 6 unless there's a night game. Biggest downside? Reporters have to wear ties when working. And there is no casual Friday.

Any idea what the yearly salary is?

I have an idea, but I don't know for sure. It probably depends a lot based on prior experience.

Again, if they're paying what I think they're paying, it's enough to live comfortably in a 1-bedroom apartment in the suburbs near the office. Oh, and the mileage rate is 48.5 cents per.

Does anyone know who the sports editor or editor is?

The sports editor is Ray Brewer. Steve Green (former LV Sun biz editor) and John Fritz (who came to Vegas by way of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger) are the paper's executive editors, with some input by LV Sun ME Mike Kelley, who is also the News' editor.

    Thanks Mr.M.

I don't know these gentlemen, but I've heard nothing good about Mr. Kelley.

Fritz is a good guy. He's a solid pro.

probably not a lot of procrastination here just because it's "a weekly." it's actually a big bunch of weeklies, and i had a friend who worked here in another department who told me each reporter was required to write 10 legit bylined stories a week minimum — or else! that's as much work or more than dailies.
