J Geils Band. Their later stuff ( Freeze Frame, Centerfold etc.) isn't anything like their early blues oriented days. Go to the concert vault and listen to their show from the last night of the Fillmore East. Blows most bands away.

It was mentioned earlier, but Thin Lizzy was a great band that never got its due, especially since they had a singer who killed himself. Phil Lynott deserved better, on a couple of levels.

As far as under-rated, I would say Cream.

They could do it all, and were at the forefront of creating the bigger sound that was then built upon by Zeppelin.

It doesn't get much better than "Sunshine of your Love" or "Crossroads", but there was so much diversity in what they did, from "Wrapping Paper" and "Badge" to "We're going Wrong" or "I feel free" and everything in between.

Here are two under-rated bands based on the talented individuals that comprise them -- the Damn Yankees and the Traveling Wilburys.

Journey is the most underrated band of all time.

I believe the term you seek is "underperforming," not underrated.

  12. Just heard a new Tool song. Still rocking and always underappreciated.
