Anyone can write a game story. The Northwest Herald, a 34,000 daily circulation daily media outlet in Chicago's far northwest suburbs, is seeking a full-time sports reporter who can provide unique enterprise content for our many formats, from digital to social media to print.

We want a reporter who is driven to go beyond the results and explore sports issues throughout our coverage area while also breaking news and providing extensive coverage of our local and high school sports scene, including bringing robust content to our high school sports website, McHenryCountySports.com.

The ideal candidate will be an idea person who has experience breaking news, producing unique enterprise content and engaging readers digitally.

Our department has a strong tradition of producing innovative journalists with plans for advancement. We plan for that tradition to continue.

The hours for this position call for night and weekend availability. Candidates should have a college degree in journalism or related field and previous experience. This position requires a thorough understanding of AP style and demonstrated ability to excel on deadline. Must have a valid drivers license, dependable transportation and proof of insurance.

Qualified candidates should send a résumé, cover letter, and work samples to:

To answer a few questions, this is a separate position from the part-time job posted recently. Our former part-time reporter, Patrick Mason, took a full time sports position in Sauk Valley. Our full-time reporter, Jeff Arnold, has been promoted to work for Chicago Football, our company's Bears publication and website and will start there in June. I will be going on vacation for a week and return May 6 to start the process on the full-time position. Please send packets to editorialrecruitment@shawmedia.com and not my email address. Thank you.

So does that mean it's better to apply now, or by the time you come back from vacation?

I would always advise applying ASAP. I will need packets by May 6 to be considered.

After this was posted, we had a second reporter leave as well. We have hired two people from the same pool of applicants.

Joey Kaufman starts on Monday and Mike DeFabo starts two weeks from Monday.

FYI, Mike was SE in Fairmont (which explains that opening) and Joey has had bylines for Columbus, OC Register, etc. Good pickups! Best of luck to you guys!
