Wow...that is must-read material. Everyone on here should look at it.

    Play editor.

Your beat writer gets wind of a sensational story involving a star player. Reporting on the story will take a minimum of five weeks, plus international travel, then maybe a week for writing, then another week for editing with maybe more time for additional reporting.

Your beat writer also says that at least two magazines, and at least one network, are chasing the same story and they have a headstart of a week, if not more.

Do you go ahead and assign the story, knowing your competition will have it first and while you might have it better, it will still look like you were writing the follow.

If it was me, I'd lean to not assigning it.

And that Africa story was terrific. Really well done.

Why did the magazines and network have a headstart?

So it's better to have absolutely nothing on it, other than maybe a blog post summarizing what ESPN or whoever did in an effort to steal clicks, than to run something four or five days after them?

That would be Tribune Co. philosophy, yes.

    DING! DING! DING!

Under previous ownership, the Times would have been all over this. But Tribune?

On the plus side, if a few more magazine pieces about Puig are published, the Times can put together a clickbait slideshow detailing them all.

Just a bump to note that Brett Ratner has bought the movie rights.
