The crazy thing is they *didn't* win by the fat contract. They won by developing a nice core of key players from their farm system. Then when those players started to get old and/or bad, they didn't have a GM who could make tough calls.

Who's going to win the AL East?

Oh, Cubs fans. They love their prospects -- even the ones who do not exist. The fact that they have specific knowledge of these "players" makes it all the better.

I am hoping RickStain isn't one of these fans.

I think Toronto is going to win this one. Baltimore is just a mediocre team with limited pitching. Chris Davis. Is back to being a nice guy with Dave Kingmans stats. That the Yankees are 4 over and 3 back without Sabathia and Pineda for most of the year with Tex and Beltran being hurt very other week is pretty amazing. Boston can't score enough to compensate for their pitching. Tampa? No clue, me and the greater Tampa St Pete area haven't followed them this year

Still going with the Yankees but wouldn't be surprised to see Maddon's boys rise up.

This Jays fan would love to see that but until they can consistently beat the other AL East teams on the road they ain't winnin' shit.

The Yankees pretty much suck. Their offense is terrible, and most of the pitching staff is injured.

Yet, they've been getting pretty good pitching lately, and are only three back.

I'm trying not to get too invested, but am starting to think they have a chance, since no one else has stepped up.

If Baltimore and Toronto ever want to win this division, this is the year to go for it.

how about long term big contracts that were worth it in hind sight? Short list or no list?

    A-Rod's first one

    Bonds with the Giants

    Greg Maddux with the Braves

Pujols' 2004 extension with the Cardinals

Manny Ramirez with the Red Sox

    Randy Johnson with the D'backs

But in recent years, not so much.

A's shitcan Jim Johnson, finally, after he starts the eighth inning of a 9-2 rout and leaves after giving up hits to the first four batters, helping turn the game into a 9-7 squeaker.

First time the A's have ever bothered to spend on a closer ($10M), and it gets them a half-season of a 6.92 ERA -- 12.21 at home.
