I had an interview with the recruiting firm they are using a few weeks back, then they had me send clips, but haven't heard anything since.

Was told they are done with interviews and will be choosing the new reporter in the coming weeks.

The position is being taken over by Stephen Bailey, who just graduated from Syracuse and was sports editor of The Daily Orange: https://twitter.com/Stephen_Bailey1/status/467788397465980928

Bailey isn't yet done with school: http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2014/08/company_news_stephen_bailey_joined_syracuse_media_group_as_sports_reporter.html. Raises two questions: Syracuse Media Group hired an active student to cover his school and it also hired someone who hasn't even graduated college for a major beat. (Granted, Syracuse students are pretty good but...)

Hiring on the cheap is so chic these days.

It's happened in our chain too. Makes people who have the experience go WTF, but if the person is qualified... looks like in this case the answer might be not quite?

Some people around syracuse.com questioned the hire. Bailey is good, but internal candidates with more experience –– and in some cases more experience covering SU –– weren't even interviewed.

And this all comes several years after the two SU football guys were moved to high school sports after the paper restructured. Don't think they ever got an explanation as to why they were moved.
