The Enquirer/Cincinnati.com is looking for a dynamic leader for our Sports Media Group, in a great big-league town. You will guide our content and be a full partner with Advertising and Marketing groups to grow audience and revenue. You will be very strategic in leading a team covering the Reds, Bengals, UC, Xavier and high school sports in the greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. Has Cincinnati already gone through the "re-apply for your job" garbage that all Gannett sides are going through, or is it still to come?

If it hasn't happened there yet, I'd go in with eyes wide open on this one. Even if this hire was assured of having a job, you will be viewed in the newsroom as someone who was hired and is being allowed to circumvent the system that the rest of the room is having to go through, and they won't have any guarantees about future employment.

Expect a very poisonous, back-biting and hostile work environment as peoples' livelihoods and careers are dangling in the balance.

 

Cincinnati's sports department does a phenomenal job. Not to take away from the other beats (because I'm most familiar with what the paper does with the Reds), but Cincinnati really inspired a project I've started here that's been a quick success. That sports team does good work.

 

Didn't they just hire a sports editor a year or so ago?

 

If they're looking outside the paper then that would suggest they've already done the "re-apply for your job" part. Because if it hadn't been done yet, whoever gets hired would just have to re-apply again.

 

This may be a digital sports editor position. I believe Creig Ewing is still in charge in Louisville of the print edition and Chris White the digital side of things. But not sure.

 

I think Angel (was it Angel), the previous sports editor in Cincy, left of his own accord to work at another company. I could be wrong.

Doesn't look like there's anyone in charge of sports in Cincy right now.

 

Whoever gets hired will be the fifth sports editor since June of 2010, and that is including the interim right now who was the interim for three months during the 2012 search.
Despite having two pro teams and two colleges, they have less writers than Louisville and Indy. Good writers and people on the desk, but what has caused the past sports editors to depart is the Executive Editor and her No. 2.
