At what point do we start asking how come the US was not more informed
about the danger of ISIS a few months ago.

Probably for the same reason we were so mis-informed about WMDs in Iraq - Intelligence gathering is not an exact science.

I don't know. With all the money and focus that we now have on terrorism.
I just don't think that we took them seriously. Didn't Kerry refer to them
as "the jv" ? For the most part it seems like they were viewed as a local
    annoyance to Syria and Assad.

    1) Who cares what Kerry referred to them as?

    2) I think we wrongly tried to show faith in the Iraqi government and its ability to control its own country.

Because he is the Sec of State who is suppose to be informed on this sort of thing.
Now we need boots on the ground a month later so I guess they are not "The JV"

They're like the Taliban. They do great against weak opposition, such as women and children. See how well they do when they try to reach the big leagues.

I think ISIS has hired CNN at their PR arm based on on going CNN tweets and
    breathless TV reporting.

CNN is the JV, CNN International is the varsity.

Won't matter if the big leaguers won't engage. You can only play who's on your schedule.
