    Gone before the Civil War?

Is there a Civil War against him inside the sports department?

    I leave at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays. I hope that's OK.

Are you talking about an AM paper or a PM paper?

This day and age, SEs can check in from home, edit stories, etc. Even look at front pages and give a thumbs up or down. So I don't think a presence in the office means quite what it once did.

That being said, there should be a short meeting late afternoon with the slot and designer to discuss the section. If not led by the SE then by an ASE who knows what's going on.

The SE is the leader, and as such, he/she should be the hardest working man/woman in the department. This guy doesn't even make the first cut when it comes to work ethic.

@Silvercharm: Exactly. It's not about the sports editor's schedule, it's about the example he or she sets. And it sounds like this sports editor is not headed for a long tenure.

My first sports editor regularly left the office at 2 p.m. But it was a p.m. paper (this was the early '80s), and he'd arrive at 4 a.m. -- often after covering an event the night before. It was an unspoken rule that we didn't slack off in that atmosphere.

I guess this guy should have stayed past 2 p.m. He is outta there.

    Less than four months.

    And an accurately predicted tenure.
