Can you publicly condemn an aspect of violence that is engrained into the text of your holy book?

When you gin up outrage among the hawks, you've got to pay them off at some point.

This part of the Kristof column --

Likewise, Palestinian militancy has accomplished nothing but increasing the misery of the Palestinian people. If Palestinians instead turned more to huge Gandhi-style nonviolence resistance campaigns, the resulting videos would reverberate around the world and Palestine would achieve statehood and freedom.

-- is the kind of thing that would have a person being jeered and called a feckless do-nothing who should resign immediately if it were suggested as a course of action for Israel or the United States. Israel doesn't HAVE to send rockets across the border either, you know -- especially in light of the fact (as reported in that Forward link) that the Israelis knew very early on that they were not searching for live bodies (the pretext for the invasion) and the kidnappings were not ordered or executed by Hamas itself but rather some loose cannons.

Thanks for the link Elliot. Agree that it's a well done article.

Highlights once again the failures of The White House reset
    button.

As Sec of State John Kerry has churned up a lot of mud but
    the results have been abysmal.

Another example of Obama leading from behind and having someone
    else do his bidding.

Of course, if he led from the front, the screechers would be saying he's imposing his will upon them and how dare he be so presumptuous to think he know's what's best for both sides.

But I do agree, it was a very compelling read.

It always seems to come down to "the screechers" .Just effin lead instead of
having one of your associates do the bidding.

He can't lead when he can't see anything beyond the carefully scripted words delivered by teleprompter.
We are so fucking astray with this guy it's a joke.

He never claims ownership until the ball is already over the goal line.

Offhand I'd say someone who makes it a policy point to say he wants to fundamentally change the country isn't someone who likes very much about it as it is.
Then you have a situation that needs real dire desperate reform and the guy sits on his hands.
He doesn't even give his favorite speeches, he has someone else give them.
