Both are moving to WDRB, also based in Louisville.

Wow. Two very good columnists gone.

Just saw this on FB and shared it. That is AMAZING. I can't imagine the C-J without Bozich.

That paper is a shell of itself (as are so many others).

Rick was at the C-J as far back as I can remember. Boy, in real businesses, they spend zillions to build brand recognition. Newspapers believe they can do without it.

Bozich started there in 1978. Crawford came along in 1992.

I would like to respectfully disagree that we are a shell.

And the editor has said on the record that he plans to fill both positions.

Good luck to both of them.

I know television stations have turnover and contracts, but given the state of the newspaper industry will these kinds of moves become more common? Good reporters are leaving newspapers, through buyouts and otherwise, but it would seem that TV stations could bolster its coverage and beef up online reports with good journalists and voices like these two.

And you're free to do so. Doesn't change my opinion.

It's not just the CJ, Creig. It's every paper across the country.

Keep in mind, Creig, that I used to LOVE the C-J. I thought it had the most talented sports staff for a paper its size in the country. The defections have taken a toll.

And when the top headline link on your sports page on the web is this:

    http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20120604/SPORTS11/306040055/Montrezl-Harrell-Louisville-basketball

With a typo in the headline and the linktext, well, yeah. Everyone has typos. I'm just saying that the defections and the "more with less" mantra that have hit all papers have hit the C-J too.

A shell of what the C-J was is still a good paper. It's just not what it was. IMO.

I'll give you editing, and I think that's unfortunate but universal.

But we have been fortunate here in sports. We have lost -- I think -- 2 1/2 writing positions in my 14 years. And one of those was a full-time Indiana University beat writer.

I'm not talking about a loss of numbers. I'm talking about a loss of talent. The C-J, off the top of my head, has lost Bozich, Crawford, Forde, Bennett, Dawson ... and others I can't remember. All in like the past 7-8 years. Maybe less.
