That's oil and water, and I'm not surprised, but given Ebert's chronic condition, that was tasteless -- but consider the source.

Seems to me that the Sun-Times ain't dead. At least not on this date.

He makes a valid point that newspapers need to do a better job of implementing the web. But instead of hammering editors and writers, he should be raising reasoned criticisms of publishers and corporations that own newspapers. Instead of slashing newsroom jobs, newspapers need to start hiring more copy editors and writers and web producers. If we are in the midst of a 24 hour news cycle, newspapers need people to work the overnight shifts.

Even Jay Mariotti, no matter how boorish, snarky or outright hostile he might be, is righted to a response.

But his choice of words, as usual, was poor.

    Stay classy, Jay.

Mariotti yaps about all the time he spent away from home, as if that is some exception to a columnist rule. He, of course, fails to mention how many times he actually spent at home instead of the White Sox locker room. And, of course, he fails to mention how the S-T gig gave him the platform for all the TV he does.

The Web site "issue" excuse is an absolute copout lie.

    True, Simon.

Mariotti blew up, talked himself out of a job and then invented his dire concern about the Internet.

I wonder what it's like when he actually does visit a press box and bumps into former Sun-Times colleagues.

    Running out the clock . . . waiting . . . waiting . . .

    Somehow, we can wait.
