Perhaps we could start gathering an informal listing of services or suggestions and sticky it at the top? Links to things like state-by-state unemployment information, any services the companies are offering (i.e. Tribune Co. resources they've made available), resources for breaking into other industries, suggestions on finding the aforementioned mental health professionals, stuff like that. Maybe set up an informal network of resume/cover letter helpers.

Great idea. This thread is it. It can probably go any number of different ways, from the above ideas and beyond, but let's keep it as productive as possible. Keep the chatter to a minimum (so people don't have to read far to get what they're looking for) and keep all carping about employers and journalism to other threads. We've got enough of those. This should be about "what to do now", if you will.

Another suggestion ... We've heard about people who have been laid off and not allowed back to their desks. Be prepared by saving copies of your clips to a flash drive or via email to yourself. Don't count on a paper's website to house your stories indefinitely. Convert design clips to PDFs in case you don't have the software at home to open them up. Do this now, don't wait. If you need the technological help, just ask.

Count me in if and when such a group is set up. I have the book and have read halfway through. I see it not as a book you read once and put away, but as a resource you go back to on an ongoing basis if you're on the job hunt and/or looking to change job fields.

A bit of good advice I read on that site:

Before you leave the company and go to a new employer, ask HR about a HIPAA Certificate for your insurance company. This has to do with moving all your records — including those of an existing, covered condition — with you to a new employer’s insurance company.  It means in most cases, they can’t deny coverage for something that was already being covered by a previous insurer.

Dental or vision, or long-term health care may be exempt from HIPAA and there are other time-imposed restrictions. Google it for more info, but get the HIPAA order now.
