It's been a long while since I laid out pages, yet I'm doing that again.

I've been doing the baseball page recently and for some reason they don't use quick keys here.

I can't remember how to set them up, help please.

In older versions of Quark there's no setting them up. You either know them or you don't know them.

http://www.keyxl.com/aaadcb0/104/Quark-Express-quark-xpress-software-keyboard-shortcuts.htm

In new versions go to System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts

Oh, crap, I just realized you're looking to set up shortcuts for your styles. To do that go to Edit>Style sheets and you can make shortcuts within the styles. Best bet to use number pad keys.

I don't even think I use quick keys that much. Then again, I'm using Quark 4.

We have Quark 7, but many of our Macs are still running System 9. Thus, we're still using Quark 4.

Are you using a PC or a Mac to design pages?

Using a Mac. It is OS-10 as well. I'm not sure which version of Quark it is.

sorry, gola ... running InDesign here. And only have a little experience in Quark ...

I suggest, though, spending 15 or 20 bucks and buying the "for dummies" book for quark ... got one initially for InDesign and have come back to it multiple times as a reference guide.

You mean my paper isn't the last paper using OS 9 and Quark 4?

I'm speechless.

Rosie, my shop is in the same ship. Actually, we're running OS 9 (Classic) INSIDE OS X, just so we can run Quark 4. They're looking to go Quark 7 sometime, which means around 2015.

Ugh.. Quark 4 here, too.

And, Gomer, 2015 would probably be optimistic for an upgrade in my neck of the woods.

We had Quark 4 with OS 9 until last fall, when our computers began failing so much they had no choice to do the switch. We went to new Mini Macs with CS3 suite. Like hauling Big Foot with a wheel barrel.

Ugh. Our reporters get minis, but layout people get G4's or G5's here. Problem is that we're still using NewsEdit Pro and will have to upgrade that when/if we switch over to full OSX structure. From what I can tell it adds quite a bit on to the cost. But it is coming.

Got you guys beat.

I've got ID CS3 on my machine, as do all of the designers. We're running ID version 2.02. Not CS2. But 2.02.

Oh, and I fucking love NewsEdit. Much better than DTI.

I'd still take that over Quark 4.1. At least you're not dealing with all the system crashes that come with running OS9 in an OSX environment.

Please tell me you're typing in blue font. Indesign CS2 or CS3 is as good, if not better than any version of Quark, depending on who you ask.

I like them both. I probably prefer ID right now, but that's because it's been a while since I used Quark.

Though, isn't saying something like "everyone who likes ______ is of ______ demographic" kind of, ohgoshidon'tknow, a bit silly?

You implied that anyone who uses Indesign is an idiot. I think you were pretty clear on that.

For the record, I never said I loved Indesign. I simply pointed out that, depending on who you ask, Indesign's latest versions are better than Quark. I've talked to some who like it better, some who don't.

I don't have enough experience with Indesign to say whether it is better on a regular desking environment, but I do think it's better for feature layout due to its seamless integration with Illustrator and Photoshop.

But feel free to continue calling people names anyhow. It seems to be your shtick.

Incidentally, it's both. I had schtick but Firefox's spellchecker corrected it to shtick on me.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/shtick

It's pretty pathetic that someone who doesn't use capital letters would go out of their way to proofread what I'm posting.

the desk folks don't use quark at your shop? they must be a bunch of fucking idiots.
And that post is the one that insinuates that those who use Indesign are idiots. I already addressed you alleging I 'love' Indesign.
